A video message about Kindergarten...

Kindergarten: Where the Journey Begins

There is something special about kindergarten. It is the first year of school. It is the beginning of a journey filled with discovery, growth, friendship, and possibility. For many students and families, kindergarten is where the South Kitsap experience begins, and we could not be more excited to welcome our newest learners.

Across South Kitsap, our kindergarten classrooms are places where students build foundational skills that will support them for years to come. Students learn to read, write, solve problems, work together, and grow in confidence and independence. Just as importantly, they learn what it means to belong.

Key steps for success as families get ready for kindergarten include:

Step 1: Register Now!
There are many important kindergarten events and dates coming up this summer. Enrolling your student early ensures your school has the correct contact information to keep you informed about upcoming opportunities and activities. Families can register online or visit their neighborhood elementary school for assistance.

Step 2: Kindergarten Jump Start
In August, incoming kindergarten students will be invited to participate in Kindergarten Jump Start. This program gives children the opportunity to become familiar with elementary classrooms, meet kindergarten teachers and classmates, and begin building comfort and confidence before the first day of school. It’s a great way to ease first-day jitters and help students feel ready for kindergarten!

Step 3: Kindergarten Orientation
Following Kindergarten Jump Start, families and students will be invited to attend Kindergarten Orientation. This is a valuable opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, ask questions, and prepare for a smooth transition into the school year. The first day of school for kindergarten students begins the week of September 8.

If you have questions or concerns about your child entering kindergarten, we encourage you to reach out to your elementary school to set up a time to visit.

What Are You Reading?

For the School Board’s next book study in support of early literacy, board members will be reading The New Girl by Cassandra Calin. This graphic novel follows Lia, a middle school student who moves from Romania to Canada and learns to navigate a new school, friendships, and language. Through humor and relatable experiences, the story explores themes of belonging, resilience, and empathy while highlighting the power of graphic novels to engage and support developing readers.

Thank you, Ms. Crosby, Librarian at Cedar Heights Middle School for the book recommendation!

Celebrating Unified Sports in South Kitsap

Unified Sports continues to grow across South Kitsap, creating opportunities for students to build friendships, strengthen leadership skills, and experience connection through athletics and school activities.

At South Kitsap High School this year, students participated in Unified Basketball and Unified Track, competing alongside peers and partners while demonstrating the power of teamwork and inclusion through sport. Unified Basketball completed a successful first season, and Unified Track athletes are currently competing in the postseason with district qualifiers in every Unified event. Supported by the school’s Unified Club, staff leaders, and student volunteers, the program continues to expand opportunities for students of all abilities to participate, contribute, and belong.

At Marcus Whitman Middle School, this year’s Unified Soccer season quickly grew into something special, bringing students, staff, and families together in support of athletes both on and off the field. Throughout the season, students demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, encouragement, and joy while building confidence and connections along the way. Marcus students also celebrated a Unified Robotics Championship earlier this year.

THANK YOU to the students, coaches, staff, families, and volunteers helping grow Unified programs across South Kitsap and creating school communities where every student feels valued, supported, and connected.

Creating More Ways to Play at Olalla Elementary

At Olalla Elementary, students are enjoying new mobility and accessible playground equipment made possible through the generous support of the South Kitsap Public Education Foundation, along with the advocacy of staff and families who helped bring the vision forward. These new additions help create a playground where more students can play, connect, and experience the joy of recess together.
